How to make a Terrarium

I was not sure what I wanted Nathan to get me for this last Valentines Day. (2012) We just moved into our home - so we are in the process of getting rid of things instead of bringing new stuff in...so it had to be something we really wanted. So, I really started thinking of what might be cool.
When I was a kid - my Mom had a terrarium and so did my best friend's Mom across the street. I always loved looking into the little world they created. I remember taking naps in front of the one at our home - and imagining stories about the little animals that lived in there.
I have been wanting to have a terrarium forever - so I knew what to ask for - for Valentines. :)

Choosing a Terrarium...Nathan and I started looking around at the stores near us, and the terrariums were major expensive and not that creative....soooo....off to Goodwill we went!
I found a extra large hurricane candle holder and was immediately taken with it...but it had no top. I asked Nater to grab it and hold onto it for me as I kept looking. I went down the kitchen isle and started looking for something to top it with...and BAM there was a cake cover with no bottom! What were the odds that it would fit the top of the hurricane??? IT DID! Bonus was that it looked super cool too! (only $8.00 for both)
My point is do no spend a bunch of money on a glass vase with a lid. (The ones I found were $35.00 to over $100.00 when you can be creative and make something work that is original)
Choosing plants...do not buy any cacti or succulents. They do not grow in terrariums! You want to choose plants that love high humidity and low sun - mostly shade plants. Also plants that will stay dwarf are preferred. So Ferns and moss are ideal. Some I have used are Maiden hair Fern, Creeping ficus, footed fern and my friend has planted African violets. (if you choose those to plant you must remember to go in and pluck off the spent flowers)
This photo is of the terrarium and a pair of shoes we bought at Goodwill.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
~ Charcoal (we bought ours in the Fred Meyer garden section
~ 3/8 inch rock
~ High peat moss soil (or mix some yourself)
~ plants
~ figurine if you choose to have one (or nest or shell or whatever you want to add for interest)
~ your terrarium

First - place your 3/8 inch rock into the bottom of your terrarium - till it is about a inch thick
~ the 3/8 rock work best because it is a perfect size to let the water through and not a lot of the soil.

Second - take 2 TBS charcoal and place into your rock in the terrarium. Then take your hand and mix slightly into the rock.
~ charcoal is what will keep your terrarium fresh and not smelling like a swamp! You do not want to
                skip this step!

Third - scoop your soil into the level rock base you have created. You are going to want to have about 2-3 inches of soil. (depending on your terrarium size)

Fourth - add your plants. Be creative - you are creating a world - make it beautiful and magical. :) Have fun!
~make sure and pat your plants in firmly.

Fifth - water your plants in. Not too much water - not too little

Lastly - place your lid on and enjoy!
I do not have my terrarium in front of a window - this was just for the photo.

I do not recommend feeding your plants in the terrarium - because you want them to stay dwarf.

Something fun I do with my terrarium is I add something from month to month. Like for Valentines day I had my little rabbit figurine holding a sign that said "Be my Valentine" for march he will have something for St' Patrick's day. Enjoy and have fun with this!

Congratulations! You have created a Eco-system!

You might want to pop in Bio-Dome into the DVD player as you create you terrarium. LOL Just a thought! LOL   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9J6qOSUJXy0

Also if you are interested in learning more pick up this book. The New Terrarium by Tovah Martin

Remember what goes under glass - must stay under glass! Once a plant is used to living in that environment it must stay in that environment. :)

3 Years Caching

I am not sure if most of you have heard of Geocaching...but it is a fun sport. (Yep - it is considered a sport) Here is a fun video (super short) - Thanks SplinterHeads for the video :)- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FxrMY91jJU ... so now you have a better idea of what you do and what it is all about!
Each cache has ratings..1-4 for difficulty and 1-4 terrain. (lets just say once Nathan climbed a rock wall to get to a cache in the Columbia Gorge LOL and another cache we just pulled up along side of in a parking lot) Geocaches are made for all levels and for all types of personalities and abilities.
Most of the Urban caches are ones you drive by when you are going for coffee or you park next to when you run into your favorite shop. They are located in parks, behind stores, in cracks on the side walk, in fences, trees...you name it - we geocachers are creative!
Then the Rural caches can be miles of walking & hidden by a waterfall or in a barn or old delapiatated building.
So what you do to get started....go to Geocaching.com and sign up (its free!!) Come up with some fun name to be known by, and you are in business.
You can purchase used GPS devices from online (Ebay- Craigs list) or go to a place like REI and get a new one. (We started caching with a Magellan Explorist 500). eXplorist 500 by MagellanNow days, though, you can get a program on your cell phone that works just a good as a GPS and it is alot less expensive for you to try out caching and see if you like it. We have a Droid2 that we are now using geocaching app and have used Geobeagle app. (we prefer the official app (geoaching) and you can get it for $9.99)
Now you are ready to find a cache! Go to your geocaching account and click on "Hide and Seek a Cache" (it will be on the left side of your screen) It will take you to a page that will show you all kinds of ways to search. I think the best way (when you are starting out) is to type in your postal code (zip code). Type it in an hit enter.
Now you will be on a page that has a list of all the caches near you. (A bunch eigh?!) Look at the top of the page you will see something that says "with google maps" click on that and you will see the map of your area. Find the street where you live and then look for a little green box that is close to your home. Thats A Cache! :)
Click on the "little green box" and a bubble will pop up telling you a quick 411 about the cache. (for your first time I would recommend a 1 star difficulty and a 1 star terrain) when you find a cache you are interested in - click the name of the cache (this will be the first line of that bubble that pops up with all the info about the cache)
You will be taken to the cache page. Look at the blue box near the top of this page. See the list of numbers? That is the geo-coordinates to locate the cache. put these into your GPS or cell phone program...and start off looking for your first cache.

Hayleyism

I bought a little snowman from Hallmark the other day - it sits in your bathroom and keeps you company - lol - he sings a little ditty "ho ho ho - who's gotta go?" and says little things like, "If you need presents wrapped I have plenty of paper in here" or "Are you feeling ok - you look a little flushed...get it...flushed" silly things
I have been waiting for the kids to come over to surprise them...Hayley was the first in...I waited - and when she emerged...I smiled at her - she rolled her eyes and said, "that is obscene" WHAHAHAHA WHAT? That's a Hayleyism!

Flash Mob @ Washington Square December 18th 2010

One of my friends decided to shake up things around Portland - her way of going about it...FLASH MOB! Lee Anne saw alot of the videos on YouTube and decided it was just what shoppers at Washington Square needed this Christmas season...so many calls and much planning there we all were - standing in the mall - waiting to belt out the Hallelujah chorus. (The YouTube link is on our blog page if you would like to see it)
Lee Anne (LeeLee), Brando and Bill Krause
Shoppers bustled, through the crowd, while checking their lists...their arms laden with many shopping bags. Many walked with focus sipping their lattes for caffeine energy. Santa's faint echo of "Ho Ho Ho" could be heard threw the shoppers loud chattering...Children crying in their parents arms, for they were becoming impatient to see Old Saint Nick. The second story of the mall was blessing all who wandered by with delicious smells of Cinnamon rolls being baked or Chicken noodle soup bubbling in the pot. The glow of the mall was not one of peace and cheer...when all of a sudden....the sounds of Heaven shot through the hub-bub and changed it all

Annual Trip 2c SANTA! December 5th 2010

Wombat started a tradition with the Zuver clan to go visit the REAL Santa every year - we go into  Portland and hit Pioneer Courthouse Mall. This is an amazing time of year to go. This year we brought along Duddle too. We arrived and the kids visited with Santa (he is amazing - he really takes time to talk and bond with the children (and adults)...he is what I picture Santa to really look like too. :) Then we walk over to get the annual mouthwatering morsel of Moonstruck Chocolates. This part of the tradition is a MUST for us all! :) We did a bit of shopping and we ate lunch by the fountains. After lunch we wandered over to hear the harpist playing as we waited for it to snow. Snow? YES! SNOW! It snows inside this mall. It is magical!

Waiting for snow
